I don’t think I ever heard the word “potluck” before this year in San Francisco, where I attended a potluck at a friend’s place. And this is from someone who’s been through an Erasmus, an MA in the UK and has visited several other friends all over Europe. Some people do have this tendency of trying to show up late at parties, such as after dinner or something, and I never really got it: what’s the point? If you can’t make it because you’re somewhere else, enjoy it there! If you don’t feel like eating what other people cook, don’t show up! Sounds a bit extreme, but I think sometimes people want to do too much when they should just try to have a good time.
